Can Fernando Alonso Do It in Monaco?

Fernando Alonso promises to spring a surprise on us in the Monaco GP this weekend.

"We have progressed, but we are still behind Ferrari, McLaren and BMW," the double World Champion said.

"Even though Monaco is a circuit where the driver can really make the difference, a good car will always be an advantage and makes things easier.

"But we will try and spring a surprise and make the most of our opportunities.

"At the moment we are fighting for seventh place, but, as we saw in Istanbul, it is possible to do better if one of the favourites has a problem. We therefore need to be ready for any chance that comes our way."

However, this might be an uphill task for Alonso since Renault's race package is less than desirable. Ever since he left the team to join McLaren, the French team has struggled to find a package that is competitive with top teams like Ferrari, McLaren and the BMW.

His teammate Nelson Piquet Jr is in a worse plight as he has yet to score a point in this year's campaign. The clock is ticking for the young rookie. Last year, Heikki Kovalainen's less than impressive race form garnered the critics of team boss Flavio Briatore just a few races into the season and the Finnish driver was dropped by the end of 2008 season, only to be picked up by McLaren. However, it is of no coincidence that the Finn is performing much better this season in McLaren, scoring a podium finish in the Malaysian Grand Prix and is 6th in the Drivers' standings.
