The axe has fallen on the Canadian GP for 2009 season, cutting the season from 19-races to 18.

The news came as a surprise to many and even the organisers were unaware of it, only to learn about the announcement via the media.

In a French-language statement released, the organisers wrote, "The organisers of the Canadian Grand Prix have learned through the media of the Canadian Grand Prix's removal from the 2009 Formula One championship calendar.

"Consequently, no comments will be issued before speaking with the interested parties, Formula One Management (FOM) and the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA)."

Similarly, the decision has incurred the wrath of several Canadian fans. The Canadian GP has been a feature on F1 calendars from every year since 1987.

Magny-Cours looks to be on dangerous grounds with French paper La Presse reporting that a draft of an F1 circuit on the grounds of Disneyland Paris. According to the paper, "the circuit would use some existing roads, and require some purpose-built sections". Poor location of the current circuit at Magny-Cours led to Bernie Ecclestone's decision to look for a new venue, and the Disneyland is just half-an-hour drive from the French capital. 4 potential venues will be proposed to Bernie and he will make the decision on where the French Grand Prix will be held from 2010 onwards.
