Canadian GP Prac 2: Hamilton Fastest While Avoiding Groundhogs

Even as Lewis Hamilton had to skillfully maneuver his car around groundhogs running onto the track, he still managed to set the fastest timings for the Canadian GP Practice 2.

While Practice 1 was a wet session which saw Felipe Massa's Ferrari taking the top of the timesheet, Practice 2 was a dry session even though rain was predicted.

Hamilton, while he managed the impressive feat of driving his car around a groundhog that strayed onto the track, voiced his concern about a possible bloodshed had he or other drivers run over these clueless animals. He had mistaken the groundhog as a beaver though.

"I love the track - there's not a part that I don't like," he said.

"But there are a lot of beavers or, I don't know what they're called. They keep coming onto the track, and I'm a bit worried they're going to kill themselves - because at the end of the day you're travelling at 200miles per hour and they're standing there in the middle of the track. There's not much you can do.

"I saw one in the middle of the track and I had to go around it. I saw the crowd, and they were quite happy I missed it."

The groundhogs were not the only ones who brought out the yellow flags during the session as Fernando Alonso took an excursion off the track and had to have his car craned away as it was in a dangerous part of the track.

His Renault teammate did not have a better fortune as his car was called back to the pits with smoke coming out of the rear brakes and he did not return to actions.

Ferrari's Felipe Massa stopped on the track after suffering from suspected hydraulic problem. Toyota's Jarno Trulli and Red Bull's David Coulthard went off the track while Trulli's teammate Timo Glock brushed the walls and damaged his front right suspension.
