Ferrari driver Felipe Massa was the fastest for the first practice session of the French Grand Prix this weekend.

His teammate Kimi Räikkönen, who declared his lust for a victory here since he had not scored a single point for the past 2 races, was only the 4th fastest, behind the two McLarens of Lewis Hamilton and Heikki Kovalainen. Brit Hamilton will be penalised 10 grid positions at the starting grid for the previous grand prix incident in which he smacked Räikkönen and himself out of the race after he failed to spot a red light at the pitlane exit.

Both drivers struggled for control as they slid out of the track - Hamilton at the Adelaide hairpin while Kovalainen at the Nurburgring chicane.

Current championship leader BMW's Robert Kubica was the 5th fastest. Fernando Alonso got the 6th slot on the timesheet, but things do not look well for his R28 as he brought out the yellow flags just 3 minutes from the end of the session as he parked his car with smoke coming out of it at Turn 8.

Jarno Trulli, a frequent qualifying performer, was the 7th fastest, ahead of Toro Rosso's Sebastian Vettel. BMW's Nick Heidfeld was at a disappointing 9th position after scoring a podium position at the last grand prix. Perhaps Dr. Mario Theissen needs to issue his driver a reminder that all drivers must contribute to keep the team ahead in the Constructor's Championship.
