Kimi Räikkönen To Use "Free" Engine Change

Reigning world champion Kimi Räikkönen looked set to take the French GP with a runaway victory when his Ferrari engine lost power after the exhaust broke and burnt a hole in the engine cover. Going into the Silverstone GP, the Finn will be using F1's new engine change rule, which has been introduced just this year.

The new rule states that every driver can change his engine for free for one unscheduled engine change in the entire season. An engine has to last for 2 races, and Räikkönen's engine was supposed to be used for the upcoming Silverstone GP too. However, as a precaution, the Ferrari team are very likely to use this "Get out of jail free" card which means that Kimi will not be penalised with 5-grid penalty during the Silverstone GP.

In usual circumstances, when a driver makes an unscheduled engine change (when the lifespan of 2 races per engine is not up) he will be hit with a 5-grid penalty, which is the same penalty as if a driver is to change a gearbox without using it for 4 races.
