The Deal About the F1 Breakaway Series

One moment Bernie Ecclestone’s denying the breakaway series rumours, the next moment, he adds fuel to the fire by saying that this could be a possible solution to the problems with the FIA now.

Ever since news of Max Mosley’s sex scandal broke out, Bernie Ecclestone was an ally of the FIA president and long time friend until increased pressures from the different parties in the Formula 1 world (including sponsors, motorsports bodies and organizers) frowned openly upon the president’s behavior.  There began then a wrestle of power between Ecclestone and Mosley especially in the areas of the F1 income.

Just last week, the 77-year old Ecclestone wrote in a letter to the FIA:

"The position of Formula One Management (FOM) and the teams and the Formula One promoters is very simple.

"They would like a Concorde Agreement signed in basically the same format as in the past agreements (under) which Formula One has been governed successfully... for over 25 years.

"It follows the agreement reached with the European Commission where the FIA are the regulators of the sport and FOM are the commercial side of Formula One. We would hope that this can continue."

While the teams and Ecclestone are still pushing for the Concorde Agreement, Ecclestone fueled rumours about the breakaway series, which could be called “GP1”, by dropping a hint to the FIA about the possible losses to them should the ten teams, sponsors and organizers pack up from the FIA and start a series on their own.

"All they've got is money that comes from Formula One. If there was no Formula One, the FIA would be in serious trouble."
